[004] Anything But Being Human
In a cookie cutter, consumerist culture where almost everything is routine and neatly presented, where has the time gone for us to just be human? When do we get to sit with our exhaustion or contemplate something like heartbreak? Every day it seems like we must work to live, drive, eat, and sleep. Many of us only find freedom and feel human outside of the 9-5 working hours or after “parenting hours” when we control our own plans and ideas. This is hardly the case. The truth is that we obviously are human at all times throughout the day. Yet the human existence will always have its fair share of work, burdens, and difficulties. It’s a part of being human to learn to cope and deal with all of life while facing our responsibilities and pitfalls.
Every day is a new chance at being human. Every day is a new day with an abundance of opportunities. Some opportunities are challenging and that’s okay. We learn and adapt to our present circumstances so that we can continue. But the troubling part of life is that we are constantly “running out of time” and energy to tend to our human experiences. We need to take time to understand our thoughts, emotions, and actions by a variety of means daily. But we are so busy with work, activities, entertainment [and more] that we fall into the trap of believing that we don’t have any time to tend to ourselves.
In reality, we do have time. We do have time to find our paths in being human. There are no rules or regulations for how we can be present, growing humans. For one person it could be journaling for another it could be canoeing. And maybe even what it means to be in touch with our human side looks different for each everyone. Maybe some of us need more time or various ways to be in touch with our human existence. We have the time to be human and to face fears, joy, family, ourselves [and more]. We just have to do it.
Being human not only impacts you but also your family, friends, society, and future generations on an emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical level. So no matter how hard life is or how busy we are being human means experiencing these things with all our being. Not an easy task when sitting at a work desk overwhelmed with tasks just to go home and attempt to recover from the craziness of life. The human experience is no walk in the park, so we need every scrap of help, reflection, peace, and effort we can find. Our lives and human experiences no matter how abrasive or confusing life can be is always going to be valuable.
The value of our human existence is not placed in the weight of what we do rather the value already exists. We are valuable because we do exist and our existence allows us to learn, grow, and change. Keep trying. Keep going. Tomorrow is a new day. We can’t turn off being human, but we can learn to be more human by leaning into our experiences through the guidance and help that life has provided.
Important Questions to ask ourselves:
What sort of pains am I feeling today [mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually]?
With how crazy my day is, how can I prioritize my health even if it something as simple as a deep breath?
Who can I look to as guidance through my human experience?
Why do I prioritize ____________ over myself? What value and harm does this bring to me? How can I improve this experience?
“I Will Give Myself Positive Messages”
I opened up a book of daily affirmations right onto this page and found it fitting for Marum’s mission:
“I will befriend myself by ceasing to create my own anxieties. What are those inner voices that constantly stir up pain and fear? Those are left-over, critical voices from my past that told me I was a bad, worthless person. Perhaps the last hold-out to my recovery is facing my shame.
Shame is like a hidden monster in the closet that pops out when I don't expect it. The messages that hit right at my core originate in my shamefulness. The journey through shame requires me to turn these inner thoughts out-ward. I recognize shame when I feel it and substitute these negative voices with positive affirmations.
Today, I begin a new phase of my recovery as I realize that some of the anxiety I feel is self-induced shame. I have the courage to treat myself with kindness and let old wounds heal.”
Continuum
Getting paid to use a content platform…? Continuum is like skill share meets Instagram. I really enjoy the short form content in lesson form to learn certain skills. For example, I learned a little bit about making AR filters for Instagram which was pretty neat. This app seems pretty early on with a limited amount of content and some of the content being not the highest quality. However, the future is bright with a platform that allows a prioritization for free learning and that, in the future, will reward you with some sort of digital crypto currency.
